So we're coming up on that magical time when long-distant deadlines are starting to loom horrifyingly close, exhibits a-f in "where I have been". (Exhibit g is tumblr.) Two of said deadlines are this week, and since I'm living by myself for the week, I would like recs from you! Because I find imagining ways to spend all the spare time I don't have to be relaxing for some reason.

SO, what media would you recommend me for all of my hypothetical viewings? What have I been totally ignoring as a massive oversight until now?* I'm currently watching (for various values of "currently" and "watching") The Wire (season two! for the first time! no spoilers! lol mcnulty, i'm sorry your life is so bad all the time!), Shameless (I hate like 75% of the things this show chooses to be), Pretty Little Liars (finale tomoz woe), Parks and Recreation (:DDDDDDDDDDD), Nikita (:DDDDDDDDDDD), The Vampire Diaries (we're in a fight right now), and Sexy Tudors (this show is terrible, but it's a warm-up for when Sexy Popes aka The Borgias starts up whenever Showtime decides we are prepared for those levels of historical sexiness).

OR ALTERNATELY: So, drabble prompts! Those are a way to get into the momentum of writing memos, yes? Yes.

So this isn't an entire waste of a post: last week I babysat for a friend (daughter, 3; son, 1) and it was the cutest thing that has happened to me in a long time. She is in the process of learning her numbers so counting is VERY EXCITING and it kind of blew her mind when I showed her how many fingers old I am (my hands + her hands + one of her brother's). "So, so, when you were a baby, the dinosaurs were still alive!" Yes, they only died out super recently, you just missed them.

* With the exception of DS9. I know. I know.

I recommend Nurse Jackie! Caveat: I started with season 2 because I heard it was better and has more Anna Deavere Smith in it. I have now finished season 2; I have not watched season 1 yet, but I like the show a lot (which is not to say unconditionally, of course). One thing I'd emphasize is that the show's treatment of multiple disabilities, psychological and physical, in its major and recurring characters is significantly better than that of any other show I've recently encountered. This may not seem like saying much, but it is!

I also recommend Homicide: Life on the Street - or at least seasons 1 through 4, and maybe 5 - because it is my favorite cop show and not a procedural and actually my favorite show ever, huh. (And it is a David Simon show.)

I... anti-rec The Good Wife. (Spoilers for The Good Wife, and also spoilers for The Wire at crossedwires's The Good Wife posts.) As holyschist commented (spoilers at that link too for The Good Wife), the show really does seem depressingly determined to disprove the existence of racism.

That's really encouraging to hear! My assumption had been the opposite, sad to say, in part because it gets billed alongside The United States of Tara so frequently, which: hahahaha, nope. I'll keep that one in mind, as well as Homicide! My dad loves that show! I keep meaning to have a look at the dvds when I'm at my parents' because I've heard good things.

That's disappointing about The Good Wife, though: I have really only heard good things about Kalinda, when I hear anything about the show, not really anything about the quality of the show, which is probably telling. Thank you for the warning!

I wouldn't say Nurse Jackie is amaaazing at disability but it is better than most - almost all the shows I'm acquainted with (which is possibly sad). I didn't realize Nurse Jackie and The United States of Tara are advertised together, since I don't have Showtime. Yeah, The United States of Tara is... oh lor'.

If you do try Homicide, watch out for 3x03 "Extreme Unction," because it is a pile of psychophobic Sybilicious tropes. That is probably my least favorite episode of the first five seasons.
