I'd been planning to do this Mad Men picspam for a while, but last night's episode pushed it from "that idea I have" into "MUST HAVE NOW."

From the beginning of the series, Don and Peggy parallel each other. In contrast to the privilege displayed by many of the other characters, they both made their own starts in business. Obviously, they have differences, they're not copies of the same character, but they are overwhelmingly similar. They're incredibly ambitious and devoted to work. They both have tempers and take things incredibly personally. They both have secrets - that the other can't seem to help finding out. In rewatching the first two seasons recently, it struck me how even their mannerisms of speech and particular actions mirror each other.

Photobucket

"No thanks. ...Okay. Maybe." (1x08 - The Hobo Code)

"I'm Peggy Olson, and I want to smoke some marijuana." (3x03 - My Old Kentucky Home)

Other than Kinsey, the self-styled bohemian, none of the other characters have experimented like this - and seem less laissez-faire in regards to many of the social mores of the time. Don is unfazed by Sal's homosexuality, nor is Peggy by Kurt or Joyce. They have more important things to worry about.

Photobucket

"Rejuvenate has a Latin root which literally means 'the return of youth.'" (1x11 - Indian Summer)

"In Greek, nostalgia literally means 'the pain from an old wound'." (1x13 - The Wheel)

After Peggy makes her first pitch for The Rejuvenator, Don tells her not to quote definitions like she did - and then goes on to do so, to great effect, to Kodak. It's a funny callback.

Photobucket

"Tell me what to do, and I'll do it." "Maybe it's this office, but you're selling too hard." (1x10 - Long Weekend)

"Because I like you and we're having a good time, and I'm a good kisser, and you know you want to." "Eugene, I'm in the persuasion business, and frankly, I'm disappointed by your presentation." (2x02 - Flight 1)

Don and Peggy are both somewhat terrible at managing their personal lives, but they're both pretty witty when it comes to dispatching unwanted prospects.

Photobucket

"One day you're there, and then all of a sudden...there's less of you. And you wonder where that part went, if it's living somewhere outside out of you. And you keep thinking, maybe you'll get it back. And then you realize it's just gone." (2x13 - Meditations in an Emergency)

"There are people out there who buy things, people like you and me. And something happened, something terrible, and the way that they saw themselves is gone. Nobody understands that. But you do. And that's very valuable." (3x13 - Shut the Door. Have a Seat.)

My favorite description of Don's plea to Peggy to go with him to start a new company is that it was the first true love confession Don has ever made. When I first heard it, though, it seemed to be both a reference to and progression from the theme of loss in Peggy's confession to Pete in the second season. The world keeps shifting in new and exciting and terrible ways, and neither knows what to do. But they move forward.

Don may have lost Anna, and Peggy might be alone again, but there's someone out there who knows them. And now they know.
